David has been making these adorable oil lamps lately and I fall in love with each and every one of them. This one is made of spalted maple and left with a simple shape in order to allow you to appreciate the art of fungi. Yes, fungi! Apparently this pattern in wood happens when two fungi eat a dying tree and meet in the middle. When they meet, they release chemicals that result in this beautiful, smoky pattern. When you hear of a wood being 'spalted', this is what it is referring to, a 'meeting of the microbes'!
This is one of many projects 'On My Needles'. This will be a scarf, crocheted in a simple pattern from The Harmony Guides 300 Crochet Stitches volume 6. The pattern is called Ridged String Network on p. 58. The yarn is Schachenmayr Nomotta Extra Merino in black and grey I purchased from my favorite LYS, Gauge. I carry Fishermans Wool from Lion Brand with the alternating black and grey. The effect is quite tweedy, I think this makes a manly scarf, hmmm....... Christmas present for DH perhaps?
This is a scarf I am making from a pattern from Knitty. I can't find the pattern at the moment but its a simple knit 3-ish rows then yo x 2 for a row, drop the yo's, knit another three-ish rows. I purchased the yarn from Gauge, the yarn is Noro Kureon, yummy to work with on wooden needles.
This is DD's first knitting project from a 5th grade, after school knitting class provided by her art teacher. She picks up knitting and crochet and puts it down after a while, only to pick it up again in a few weeks. Eventually, she will get hooked and I will hold on to this for her.
